Azeri former lawmaker under search on libel charges

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s law enforcement agencies have declared a search for a former lawmaker who is accused of insults and libel, the Interior Ministry told Interfax Azerbaijan.

The search was announced after Rza Ibadov failed to appear in court for a testimony.

Ibadov was elected to the Milli Majlis (parliament) in 1995 and headed the parliamentary commission on international and inter-parliamentary relations. Though he submitted his candidacy for the 2000 parliamentary poll, he unexpectedly left Azerbaijan on the eve of the elections. In his later media interviews, Ibadov said he lived in Britain.
