Senior Russian officer killed at Azeri radar station

BAKU – A senior Russian military officer has been killed at the Gabala radar station, a mammoth Soviet-era missile defense facility leased by Russia in Azerbaijan.

Major Sergei Grachov, 47, was killed by a fellow serviceman on Sunday, Azerbaijani Military Prosecutor’s Office said.

The prosecutor’s office has filed criminal charges. Russian law enforcers are expected to arrive in the Gabala region to assist in the investigation.

Though a serviceman suspected of having committed the crime has been detained, his identity and the motive of the murder are not disclosed. However, Azerbaijani media reports say that robbery could have been the cause of the crime. The killer, who is said to be a Russian, reportedly cut off Grachov’s head in his bed.

The Gabala radar station, located in northern Azerbaijan, has been operated by Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
