Il Foglio apologizes to Azeri first lady after libelous report
BAKU – Italian Il Foglio newspaper has extended an apology to Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people for the false report it published about the First Lady.
An article, titled "Set of apologies to Baku", said that its December 3 story was "not serious" and had no merit.
"We were careless to use unconfirmed information posted on the WikiLeaks website," Il Foglio said. "The sources we referred to in the article turned out completely unreliable. We admit our mistake and are publishing this retraction and extending an apology. We are confident that mutual understanding, good relationship and sympathies between the Azerbaijani and Italian people will see no harm whatsoever in the wake of this journalistic error."
The Azerbaijani First Lady’s Protocol Service earlier condemned the Il Foglio article, labeling it as false and slanderous, and demanded that the newspaper publish a retraction.
