Self-proclaimed republics are closely cooperating in the military and other fields, hearings in the Russian State Duma (parliament) have revealed.
"We have an agreement on cooperation with these republics," vice-speaker of the Georgian republic of South Ossetia Tarzan Kokoyta told the Baku-based Lider TV channel. "Just like other unrecognized republics, we are cooperating with Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh [an Azeri region under Armenian occupation] in the political, economic and military fields. If the Azerbaijani government moves to regain Garabagh, we will provide all the needed military aid to Armenians."
Kokoyta admitted that joint military exercises are held every year in self-styled republics, including Upper Garabagh.
Discussions on "frozen" conflicts held in the Russian legislature last week centered on the situation in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, as well as Dnestr, Moldova.
The Garabagh conflict had not been officially included in the agenda on the insistence of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry. But lawmaker Konstantin Zatulin who is known for his pro-Armenian stance said prior to the hearings that the issue would not stay out of spotlight at the discussions.
