Kazakh envoy says UN vote not to affect ties
Kazakhstan that stated a neutral stance on a recent United Nations
resolution demanding swift withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces
from the occupied Azerbaijani territories has said the decision
would have no impact on its relations with Azerbaijan.
"The friendship ties between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are above all kinds of resolutions," the newly-appointed Kazakh ambassador in Baku Serik Primbetov told his first news conference. "I don't think our relations should be assessed in terms of the outcomes of the vote on this resolution at the UN General Assembly."
39 countries voted for the document comprising nine provisions that upheld Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and inviolability of its borders, and demanded full and unconditional pullout of the Armenian forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
It also asserted the inalienable right of the population evicted from the occupied territories to return home.
Primbetov said the Kazakh side had held talks with Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov prior to the vote.
"He explained the situation to us, and some new ideas were expressed. I would like to note that we support Azerbaijan's territorial integrity at all times, and our position remains unchanged."
Primbetov emphasized that his country backed a peaceful resolution of the Garabagh conflict.
