Three Azeris detained in bid to smuggle $20m to Russia
MOSCOW – Customs officers in a Moscow airport have detained three Azerbaijani citizens and an Iranian national with $14.5 million and 4.12 million euros on them.
The four passengers, who had arrived from Turkey, brought the money in four suitcases and four bags, the Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported. The origin or destination of the money was not immediately clear.
All four have been charged with smuggling and are facing up to five years in prison if convicted.
Under Russia’s laws, cash worth only $10,000 can be brought to the country without being declared.
