Azeri, Georgian clerics discuss regional conflicts
TBILISI – The Caucasus Muslims Office chairman, Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada discussed unresolved conflicts in the South Caucasus region with Georgia`s Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II in Tbilisi on Monday.
The Azerbaijani clerical leader said Azerbaijan and Georgia both face occupation of their territories and violation of their territorial integrity, therefore, the two countries’ challenges are similar.
"Sinister foes are causing problems for the Georgian and Azerbaijani people," Pashazada said. "Much work remains to be done to establish peace in the Caucasus. We have to meet frequently to achieve restoration of our lands’ territorial integrity. These meetings are important."
Patriarch Ilia II said the problems facing the South Caucasus region must be resolved, and these are issues facing not only Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, the three regional countries, but also the whole world.
"There is no war in the Caucasus, but there is no peace either, and this can no longer be tolerated," the Georgian Catholicos said.
Ilia II added that just like Nagorno Karabakh was broken off from Azerbaijan, Abkhazia and South Ossetia were separated from Georgia, which does nothing to promote peace in the volatile region.
