Azeri clerical leader urges Medvedev to stop violence in Russia
MOSCOW – Azerbaijan’s clerical leader has appealed to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, expressing concern over violent ethnic clashes that have swept through Russia in the past days.
In a letter, Caucasus Muslims Office chairman, Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada called on President Medvedev to prevent further clashes.
The Russian capital saw its biggest public disturbances for almost a decade last week as crowds of nationalists and football hooligans clashed with police near Red Square. 30 people were injured. Rioters were protesting the death of a 28-year-old football fan who was killed in a brawl with migrants from Russia`s North Caucasus region. Over 1,300 people were arrested in Moscow alone and hundreds of weapons were seized. Protests against people of the Caucasus origin have also swept through other Russian cities.
President Medvedev called the disorder and the tensions it exposed a threat to Russia’s stability, RIA Novosti reported earlier.
