Drug smuggling from Iran on the rise – Azeri customs chief
BAKU – Cases of smuggling drugs to Azerbaijan from Iran have lately increased, Azerbaijani State Customs Committee chairman Aydin Aliyev told reporters.
"It is interesting and disappointing at the same time that sometimes several such cases are reported in a single day," Aliyev said.
According to him, cases of carrying narcotics both on and inside the body have become more frequent over the last year.
The Committee chairman said it would be wrong to link the increasing number of drug trafficking cases to improper inspections of people at customs checkpoints in neighboring Iran.
"This could be the result of negligence on the part of some customs officers. But the main reason is that with technology advances, criminals have begun to employ new methods."
