EU, Azerbaijan to launch talks on easing visa rules
BAKU – The European Union may launch talks with Azerbaijan in the coming months on simplifying visa regulations and re-admission, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammad-Guliyev has said.
He told journalists Friday that fruitful discussions on issues related to the visa regime were held in Baku during the first meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Subcommittee on Justice, Freedom, Security and Human Rights and Democracy in late November. The subcommittee’s next meeting will be held in Brussels next year.
Mammad-Guliyev said further that Azerbaijan and the EU continue holding talks on an Association Agreement.
The Association Agreement is to be signed within the framework of the Eastern Partnership, a program that envisions the EU’s closer cooperation with the three South Caucasus states and three other former Soviet republics. Negotiations on the issue started in Brussels in October, while their second round will be held in Baku in January.
Mammad-Guliyev said Baku was not ready to sign such an agreement at this point.
"Our position is that this has to be a document of high quality, because it will create legal framework for our future cooperation," he said.
