US embassy mulls WikiLeaks reports with Azeri officials

BAKU – The US embassy in Baku has expressed concern during meetings with Azerbaijani officials over the recent release of diplomatic cables by the WikiLeaks website, the embassy spokesman has said.

Terry Davidson reiterated that the U.S. condemns the disclosure of this confidential information to the world community.

"This particularly puts a crimp into diplomatic relations and complicates the work of diplomats," he told journalists.

Davidson noted that Azerbaijan is a crucial partner for the U.S.

"The two countries maintain very firm strategic partnership. We cooperate in all areas, including security, economic development and democratic institutions."

The WikiLeaks reports that have caused anger around the world contain about 250,000 secret letters sent by US diplomats to the State Department. The cables release alleged details of the Obama administration’s correspondence concerning crises and conflicts, US diplomats’ terse remarks about Islamic and European leaders, and personal conversations between US officials and numerous countries’ leaders, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
