Another Azeri jailed blogger released
BAKU – Another Azerbaijani jailed blogger was released on Friday, after serving part of his sentence.
A Baku court ruled to replace Emin Milli’s remaining imprisonment term with a suspended sentence and he was released from the courtroom.
A Baku court in November 2009 sentenced Milli, an online TV blogger, to two and a half years in prison, while another blogger, Adnan Hajizade, was sentenced to two years in prison. The two were arrested in July last year over a brawl in a Baku restaurant and were convicted on charges of hooliganism and an assault on two other men. But their supporters and some rights champions claim they were victims of an unprovoked attack and their arrest was politically motivated.
The other blogger was released on Thursday under a ruling of an appeals court in the capital Baku.
The US embassy in Azerbaijan has welcomed the bloggers’ release. It said in a statement that the United States was closely following Milli and Hajizade’s cases, which is evidenced by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s open calls to free the bloggers.
