BAKU – Up to a thousand units of ammunition have been discovered in Baku, according to the Azerbaijani agency engaged in defusing mines.

A 14-people-strong special group is working to render the ammunition harmless jointly with the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the area located near the television tower, the director of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has said.

"Some of the ammunition have warheads," says ANAMA Director Nazim Ismayilov. "These include rockets fired from helicopters."

According to the emergencies ministry, six 125 mm armor piercing ammunition have been found on-site.

Ismayilov said the ongoing operations will take a week. Some of the ammunition will be destroyed at an ANAMA shooting ground, while others will be blown up at the site proper.

The ANAMA director added that a scrutiny was underway to determine who has dropped off the explosives.
