Azeri civil society group slams U.S. over election feedback

BAKU – An Azerbaijani civil society group that observed the country’s parliamentary poll on Sunday has criticized the US State Department’s statement on the elections.

"The unobjective feedback is aimed at putting pressure on Azerbaijan," said Maharram Zulfugarli, election headquarters head of the Association of Assistance to Civil Society Development in Azerbaijan.

The US government’s statement said the elections did not comply with democratic standards and called to hold accountable those responsible for alleged electoral fraud.

Zulfugarli told a news conference Thursday that the State Department’s biased assessment could give an incentive to the realization of the scenarios of Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine-like post-election instability and riots in Azerbaijan, which has turned into a leader in the South Caucasus region.
