Azeri embassy opens in Cuba
Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Cuba on Sunday. A large
Azerbaijani delegation led by Minister of Economic Development
Heydar Babayev and Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov attended
the ceremony.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in
1992, but bilateral ties gained an incentive after Foreign Minister
Elmar Mammadyarov’s visit to Cuba in September 2006.
The agreements on cooperation and visa-free travel of service
passport holders were signed between the two foreign ministries on
Cuba’s initiative last year.
During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation discussed with Cuban
officials energy and trade issues.
"Cuba is closer to Azerbaijan than a friend and always supports us
in the international arena," Babayev said in a meeting with Cuban
Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Marta Lomas
Morales.
A meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic
cooperation was held and a protocol signed. A document on
cooperation may be inked by the two countries’ law-enforcement
agencies in the future.
Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque was among those who
backed the inclusion of a provision concerning Armenians’ illegal
activity in the occupied Azerbaijani territories in the UN General
Assembly agenda in 2004.*
