Turkic states' lawmakers praise Azeri vote

BAKU – Observers of the Turkic countries' Parliamentary Assembly (TurkPA) have said Azerbaijan's parliamentary elections were democratic and complied with international standards.

Mustafa Kabakci, a member of the election observation mission and the Turkish parliament, said all political forces and the public were represented in Sunday’s elections. Also, favorable conditions were provided for international observers to monitor the polling, Kabakci said while announcing the TurkPA mission’s statement on Azerbaijan's elections.

The TurkPA mission observed the elections in three districts of the capital Baku.

Kabakci said the mission had followed the entire electoral process – from the opening to the closure of polling stations and the vote count.

"In some polling stations, conditions were provided to watch the elections live on the internet with the use of new technologies and for displaced persons [those driven out of their homes due to the Armenian occupation of a part of Azerbaijan’s territory] to vote."

Kabakci also said there was no interference with the work of electoral commissions and the preparations necessary to conduct exit polls were made.

The Turkish lawmaker said a TurkPA delegation had observed elections in Azerbaijan for the first time.

The TurkPA election observation mission included two members of Kazakhstan’s parliament and three representatives of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly.

Parliament members were elected for a five-year term under the majority of votes. 690 candidates contested 125 seats in the Milli Majlis. The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has gained about 60 percent of the seats in the legislature, according to preliminary tallies.
