BAKU – The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has said it was confident of having secured a win at the parliamentary elections held Sunday.

"I believe that YAP has gained victory at the polls. I arrived at this conclusion based on the information provided by our observers," YAP deputy chairman Ali Ahmadov told a news conference late on Sunday.

690 candidates, including 111 YAP nominees, contested 125 seats in the Milli Majlis (parliament).

Ahmadov said the parliamentary election was a successful step taken on the path of democratic development in Azerbaijan.

He said the polling was held fairly and transparently. "All conditions were provided for all political parties and citizens willing to participate in the elections."

The YAP deputy chairman said the participation of 23 parties was "an expression of political interest" in the elections and also indicated the interest shown in the vote by political parties.

"The number of election candidates from opposition parties exceeds those running from YAP. This shows that the necessary conditions were ensured for political parties."
