Turkey, Azerbaijan to boost defense industry co-op – minister
BAKU – Azerbaijan and Turkey intend to raise defense industry cooperation to a higher level, Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, told journalists in Baku on Tuesday.
Gonul is due to discuss military cooperation issues with Azerbaijani leaders and military officials.
Turkey has been Azerbaijan’s key military ally for many years, and the two countries have signed a number of agreements.
Informal sources have lately said that Turkey may station a military base in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Nakhchivan is the only link between the two countries. It was geographically separated from Azerbaijan in the past and faced economic blockade in 1991 by Armenia, which has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since a war in the 1990s.
