200 Iranians jailed in Azerbaijan: ambassador
BAKU – 200 citizens of Iran are currently jailed in Azerbaijan, while 18 Azerbaijani nationals are imprisoned in the neighboring country, Iranian Ambassador in Baku Mahammad Bagir Bahrami has said.
Bahrami told journalists that most of the detainees had been arrested on charges of border trespassing and drug trafficking.
The ambassador said he had held meetings with both Iranian and Azerbaijani justice ministers and the parties decided to develop a project on the convicts’ serving the rest of the sentences in their home countries.
"There have been such exchanges in the past. We hope that following a meeting of the two countries’ justice ministers, citizens of one country will not remain in the other’s prison."
