Ban Ki-moon says U.N. ready to aid Karabakh settlement

NEW YORK – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said the United Nations was ready to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh conflict.

He was replying to a question on Armenia’s failing to implement the UN Security Council resolutions demanding its unconditional pullout from the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

"There are a number of conflicts in the world, and these conflicts, including the Nagorno Karabakh dispute, must be resolved in peace and through dialog," the UN secretary-general told a news conference devoted to the 60th anniversary of the European human rights convention.

"The Nagorno Karabakh conflict has long been in existence. The OSCE Minsk Group is fulfilling its mediating mission in the peace process. The U.N. is ready to make its contribution to a negotiated solution as well."

The Karabakh conflict emerged during the last few years of the Soviet Union. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
