Azeri officials rebuff claims on abuse in military
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s military authorities have dismissed claims on abuse of servicemen by their superiors circulated on Facebook, a popular social networking website.
Videos have been posted on Facebook showing two officers who lined up 19 soldiers, slapping and kicking them. On Wednesday night, the websites of media outlets published in English, French, German, Spanish and Turkish and other languages posted comments on the alleged abuse of the soldiers.
Defense Ministry deputy spokesman Teymur Abdullayev has said the footage was outdated. "This is an old matter and we have nothing to do with it."
Tarana Mammadova, the Interior Troops spokesperson, said the videos were a premeditated provocation. She also said the footage circulated online was old, saying there was no abuse in the country’s Interior Troops.
"That footage was prepared by saboteurs and aims to mislead the public," Mammadova added.
