Russian public figure says war only option for Garabagh
Military action is the only option to settle the Armenia-Azerbaijan
conflict, chairman of Russia's Islamic Committee says.
Geydar Dzhemal was commenting on parliament member Konstantin Zatulin's statement that should hostilities resume over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, Russian troops based in Armenia could be drawn to military operations.
Azerbaijani officials are concerned that part of Russian weaponry recently moved from Georgia to a Russian base in Armenia could be used against Azerbaijan in case a war over Garabagh is launched. Moscow has dismissed the reports.
Dzhemal said Zatulin's remarks were of no importance. "His statements have always been in the air. I am 100 percent sure that just as was the case with Georgia, Russia will withdraw from Armenia in the near future."
The committee chairman hit out at the West's approach to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, saying it was not keen on achieving resolution of the long-running dispute. He said the United States was using the conflict "as tools for blackmail".
Dzhemal said Azerbaijan should instead rely on itself and neighboring states. "Azerbaijan could settle the conflict jointly with its regional neighbors," he added.
