BAKU – The United States allocates $250,000 per year under programs on fighting human trafficking in Azerbaijan, the US embassy spokesman has said.

"Azerbaijan has not escaped this global problem. Azerbaijan is both a source and a transit country for forced labor and people subjected to human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation," Terry Davidson told a regional meeting on assistance and social reintegration of human trafficking victims in Baku on Thursday.

According to the Interior Ministry, 70 people were brought to book over such crimes in the first half of 2010. The number of such offenses committed against women increased 3.2 percent. 65.7% of the perpetrators were women.

The US State Department will spent $22 million this year to finance programs on combating trafficking in humans worldwide, Davidson said.
