Azeri ruling party issues warning ahead of November poll
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s ruling party has issued a warning to the candidates running for the November parliamentary elections without its approval.
The Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) said it has nominated candidates to run for the elections, and those hopefuls that are not included in this list would be punished, YAP deputy chairman Ali Ahmadov told reporters.
Ahmadov said YAP has over 500,000 members, and several hopefuls’ running for the elections individually does not pose a threat to the party, but such instances are considered "violations of discipline within the party".
"Therefore, it is important to take adequate measures," Ahmadov added.
YAP announced its list of 114 election hopefuls on September 18. The party also said it disapproves of YAP members’ submitting nominations not included in the list, warning that those hopefuls would be expelled unless they withdrew their candidacies.
Some 50 YAP representatives plan to stand in the elections on their own initiative.
The parliamentary poll will be held in 125 constituencies based on the majority-of-votes system on November 7.
