UN chief calls to remove snipers from Azeri-Armenian frontline

NEW YORK – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has supported the initiative to remove snipers from the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

Speaking following a recent meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian in New York, he said this would reinforce the ceasefire accord signed by the two countries in 1994.

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia still occupies 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory in defiance of international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been mostly fruitless so far.
