Armenian clerical leader asks president to aid killed Azeri soldier’s handover
YEREVAN – Armenian Catholicos Karekin II has appealed to President Serzh Sargsyan over repatriating the Azerbaijani soldier recently killed on the frontline, Azerbaijan’s clerical leader has said.
Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada, the Caucasus Muslims Office chairman, said that after he had requested Russian Patriarch Kirill to facilitate the handover, the latter appealed to the Armenian cleric over the issue.
President Sargsyan has not yet responded to the appeal filed by Karekin II.
Warrant officer Mubariz Ibrahimov, posthumously declared a National Hero, killed four Armenian soldiers in a clash in June on the contact line separating Armenian and Azerbaijani forces. His body remained on the Armenian side and has yet to be returned to Azerbaijan.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s. Armenia still occupies part of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
