Azeri diaspora group’s exec arrested in Iran

BAKU – An official of the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC), a group uniting Azerbaijanis abroad, was arrested in the Iranian city of Tabriz on Wednesday morning, WAC said.

Eliza Ismayilova, the organization’s board member, had arrived in the neighboring country for a medical examination, her husband, Sayman Arusun, told Radio Liberty.

Ismayilova traveled from the capital Tehran to Tabriz to meet with her father-in-law. In the morning, five persons presumed to be officers of the Iranian intelligence agency ETELAAT entered her father-in-law’s home. First, they inspected Ismayilova’s passport and claimed that the photo in her ID looked like a fake one. They further took her and her father-in-law out of the house and headed in an unknown direction.

According to Arusun, the whereabouts of his father and wife are still unknown.
