Azeri speaker discusses co-op with Turkic states’ parliament officials

BAKU – The chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament Oktay Asadov met with Secretary General of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (parliament) Sadettin Kalkan and deputy head of the Kazakh Senate administration Berik Arin on Monday to discuss the development of relations between TurkPA member countries.

The meeting focused on preparations for the next plenary session of TurkPA in Kazakhstan, which will be held in March next year, as well as the establishment of three standing committees, the appointment of chairmen and deputy chairmen, the action program of the assembly for 2011-2012 and other issues.

Kalkan and Arin also met with the head of Azerbaijani Parliament's administration Sefa Mirzayev.

TurkPA was established on Nov. 21, 2008, under an agreement signed by the Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Turkish parliamentary speakers in Istanbul.

Baku hosted the first TurkPA plenary meeting on Sept. 29, 2009.

The assembly's secretariat is located in Baku and has the status of an international organization.

TurkPA's goal is to support Turkic-speaking countries in international organizations, as well as to help them share their experiences in legislative processes. The assembly also aims to preserve language, culture and history in Turkic-speaking countries, and to further strengthen political, economic and cultural ties between member countries.
