Azeris hail CNN for honoring TV reporter, Armenians riled

BAKU – A CNN broadcast about a prominent Azerbaijani television reporter who died during the war fought with Armenia in the early 1990s has angered Armenians.

The Armenian Assembly of America, one of the most powerful Armenian lobby groups in the United States, called upon Armenians in the U.S. to send letters of protest to CNN International.

The Coordination Center of Azerbaijanis in Germany has countered the move. The center sent letters expressing its appreciation to CNN, its Executive Vice President Richard Davis, World View program host Guillermo Arduino, and urged the German community and Azerbaijani diaspora organizations to join the initiative, Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Work with the Diaspora told AssA-Irada.

On August 28-31 CNN’s World View broadcast a program about Chingiz Mustafayev, a national hero, who covered the Khojaly massacre committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis in 1992 and his efforts to convey these facts to the world community. The program, devoted to the 50th birthday anniversary of the prominent reporter and prepared by the Baku-based ANS TV channel’s reporter Sevinj Osmangyzy, was broadcast on CNN five times.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations have been fruitless so far and the Azerbaijanis displaced during the hostilities remain stranded.
