Azerbaijan among buyers of Russian tanks: analysts

MOSCOW – Russia leads the way in the world on the exports of tanks, local RIA Novosti news agency quoted an analyst as saying.

Director of the Center of Analysis of World Arms Trade, Igor Korotchenko, says the country supplied foreign buyers with 482 new tanks worth $1.57 billion in 2006-2009.

India is the biggest buyer of Russian armored vehicles, the center estimates.

According to Korotchenko, Russia has recently signed contracts on the supply of new tanks to Algeria, Venezuela, Cyprus, and Turkmenistan.

Supplies were also reportedly carried out to Azerbaijan (62 T-72 units) and Uganda (23 T-55/T-72).

Several programs envisioning upgrade of foreign tanks are being implemented with Algeria, Libya and Syria, the analysts said.

According to the center, Russian tank sales are expected to increase to 859 in 2010-2013.

Russia’s main rivals in this segment of the market are the United States and Germany, it said.
