Two major opposition parties set up election bloc
BAKU – Two major Azerbaijani opposition parties signed a deal Wednesday to establish a bloc to jointly run for the November parliamentary elections.
The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan and the Musavat party, which set up the PFPA-Musavat bloc, decided to nominate a single candidate on 90 election constituencies, said Musavat leader Isa Gambar, who co-signed the agreement with PFPA chairman Ali Karimli.
The two parties will work to agree on other constituencies as well.
The PFPA leader claimed that the new bloc will create "a real alternative" to the incumbent authorities. Moreover, the agreement will allow both to combine PFPA and Musavat’s resources and increase civil participation in the forthcoming elections, he said.
Karimli believes that if a free and fair election in held on November 7, the newly established bloc will claim at least two-thirds of seats in the legislature.
But the authorities deem these views as baseless claims. Deputy chairman of the Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP), Ali Ahmadov, said as early as during the initial stage of PFPA-Musavat talks that no matter which bloc is set up, it will never be able to take the ruling party’s place in Azerbaijani society.
A number of independent analysts also question the prosepcts for the new bloc’s attaining much success.
Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority of votes system in 125 constituencies.
