Yerevan sees Russian base as security guarantee
Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian has said Russia's military
base stationed in his country provided homeland security.
"There is a great deal of international pressure on Armenia and the Russian base is an important factor in neutralizing this pressure," he told reporters.
Sarkisian said the base should not be a topic of discussion during talks on settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.
Azerbaijani officials are concerned that part of Russian military machinery moved from Georgia to Armenia could be used against Azerbaijan in case hostilities over Upper Garabagh resume.
