Armenian seeks to run for Azeri election
YEREVAN – An Armenian who moved to Armenia from Azerbaijan is reportedly seeking to stand in the coutnry’s parliamentary elections due November 7.
Grigori Ayvazyan, the head of the organization called the Assembly of Azerbaijan Armenians, has told journalists that he was looking to return to Baku, Armenia Today news agency said.
Ayvazyan said he would appeal to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and request ensuring his safety with the UN mediation.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. OSCE-brokered peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a shaky cease-fire in 1994. Armenia continues to occupy Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.
Ayvazyan called upon other Armenians who moved to Armenia to return to Azerbaijan as well, adding that he had asked the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh to facilitate their comeback.
