One killed in southern Azerbaijan shooting
BAKU – A group of unidentified gunmen opened fire in a village of Azerbaijan’s southern Lankaran region on Thursday night, killing one person and wounding another, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Police officers have detained two residents of Masally, another southern region, on suspicion of committing the crime, and search is underway for several other suspects.
Lankaran prosecutor Ramiz Nabiyev has dismissed circulating media reports saying that the shooting had been perpetrated on religious grounds. He told Radio Liberty that the clash had occurred due to a dispute over personal relations.
Reports said the gunmen had pulled up in several cars and opened fire upon local residents who gathered outside a mosque in the village.
