Israeli embassy in Baku picketed over Mideast policy

4 September 2010 09:52 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – A group of people attempted to hold an unauthorized protest outside the Israeli embassy in Baku on Friday morning to condemn Tel-Aviv’s policy on Palestine.

The protesters, who unexpectedly pulled up in a bus to the hotel housing the embassy compound, chanted slogans "Death to Israel", "Death to Armenians" and "Freedom to Guds and Karabakh".

The pickets called upon Muslims to support their brethren in faith on the day marked by the world’s followers of Islam as the International Quds Day.

Police officers who arrived at the scene prevented the protest from proceeding. The Interior Ministry spokesman, Ehsan Zahidov, said the protest had been thwarted as it was not authorized by the executive authorities of Baku. The police detained about 15 protesters who remained defiant.
