Gang nabbed in Azerbaijan on charges of killing servicemen

BAKU – A group of five religious radicals charged with murdering serviceman and stealing weapons from military units has been seized in Azerbaijan.

The outlaws were nabbed in a joint operation of the National Security Ministry and the Prosecutor-General’s Office, the law enforcement agencies said in a joint statement.

The detainees are said to have broken into a military unit in Azerbaijan’s Terter region located on the frontline with Armenia in December 2008, killed one military man, wounded another, and stolen weaponry.

The crime was disclosed when law enforcers were investigating the case of the wanted members of the armed group of religious radicals who call themselves "the Sumgayit Community".

Investigators established that the crime had been committed jointly by the "Sumgayit Community" and another armed group called the Sahil Community, which is part of the former.

The "Sumgayit Community" members, which include more than 30 people, were handed down different jail sentences on June 17. They had been charged with an attempt to establish a religious state in Azerbaijan by military means.
