Italian FM’s visit to Azerbaijan postponed (UPDATED)

BAKU – Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini’s official visit to Azerbaijan, initially scheduled for September 7, has been postponed, according to the Azerbaijani embassy in Italy.

The postponement is due to the situation that has emerged in the Italian parliament.

In late July the country’s ruling party lost the majority in the legislature, after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s rival, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Gianfranco Fini drew 34 lawmakers and 11 senators to his new group, Future and Liberty for Italy. Snap parliament elections may be held in Italy.

Frattini is due to visit Azerbaijan upon his counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov’s invitation. The sides are expected to discuss key issues of bilateral and regional cooperation in the political and economic fields.
