Bike ride kicks off in Azerbaijan as environment catches spotlight
BAKU – A bicycle ride has been launched in Azerbaijan to draw public attention to environmental protection as part of the Year of the Environment, which kicked off Monday. The initiative is sponsored by the country’s leading cellular operator Azercell.
"The Azerbaijan-Europe bicycle tour", taking place on Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov’s proposal, has been joined by 35 bicyclists from 14 countries. Azimov, himself, is among participants.
The goal of the initiative is to promote a healthy life-style and increase public awareness, as well as to support the development of cycling in Azerbaijan.
According to the deputy minister, the ride, which began in the capital Baku, will end in the northwestern city of Ganja on September 6. Along the way, the bicyclists will stop over in Shamakhy, Ismayilli, Gabala, Goychay and Mingachevir. They are expected to tour environmental sites and hold meetings with local residents and officials.
The bicycle ride is being organized jointly by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs; Youth and Sports; Ecology and Natural Resources; NATO; and the European Economic Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry.
Given that environmental safety is a priority issue for Azerbaijan, Azercell has been consistently supporting such projects.
Azercell has already sponsored a number of projects aimed at the development of sports, as well as various sporting events and tournaments. The company, which is committed to supporting both professional and amateur athletes, comprehensively supported the World Gymnastics Championships in 2005. It has also supported a soccer tournament arranged by the Azerbaijan Turkey Business Association and the volleyball club of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies.
Azercell Telecom LLC, which is the main partner of the national soccer and basketball teams, provided telecommunications sponsorship for the first summer Olympics held among teenagers in Singapore.
Azercell also sponsors the Rabita Baki women’s volleyball team, which has attained great success with the cellular provider’s support.
