Azeris face discrimination in Iran: UN panel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A United Nations panel has called on Iran to step up efforts aiming to counter racism and discrimination.

The UN committee against racism said that Azeris, Bahais and Kurds face discrimination in Iran in such areas as education and healthcare and essentially are not represented in the country’s social life.

The committee also said women from ethnic minorities encounter two-fold discriminatory treatment.

Iran is home to about 30 million Azeris, or about 40 percent of the country’s population, which is predominantly Persian.
