Azeri serviceman wounded by Armenian grenade

27 August 2010 11:45 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – A serviceman of Azerbaijan’s armed forces has been wounded by fire from an Armenian grenade launcher.

The shell, fired in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district Wednesday evening, exploded nearby, inflicting numerous shrapnel wounds to the 19-year-old soldier, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said.

The soldier was hospitalized and is in severe condition.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by international mediators have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
