Setting up of Azeri opposition’s election bloc delayed (UPDATED)

BAKU – The establishment of a unified election bloc of Azerbaijan’s opposition is being delayed due to the failure to reach agreement by the Civil and Development Party (CDP), Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) and the Azerbaijan Liberal Party (ALP).

"We still have not reached agreement on some key issues," CDP chairman Ali Aliyev was quoted by the media as saying. "We will announce the establishment of the new bloc as soon as a certain result is achieved."

Azerbaijan’s three main opposition parties - the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), ALP and CDP – were included in the Azadlig Bloc, which was set up in 2005.

The PFPA announced the formation of a new election bloc with the Musavat party on July 13. Following the announcement, ALP and CDP said they would work toward creating an alternative election bloc.

Earlier, DPA chairman Sardar Jalaloglu and Azerbaijani Intelligentsia Association chairman Eldaniz Guliyev said that they would also join the bloc.

Jalaloglu said his party was awaiting a response from ALP and CDP.

"Creation of a bloc is not such an easy process as "2 +2". It is a clash of interests of different people and a challenge to make certain compromises. We must agree on all issues," Jalaloglu said.

For his part, LPA chairman Avaz Temirkhan said the result should be achieved soon.

The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, scheduled for November 7, are held by the majority of votes system in 125 constituencies. Previous elections were held in November 2005.
