German TV channel distorts Azeri soccer club title

21 August 2010 11:06 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – German television channel ZDF distorted the title of an Azerbaijani soccer club when it faced Germany’s Borussia Dortmund team on Thursday.

The broadcaster presented the Borussia-Garabagh match as one between Borussia and "Aghdam", chairman of the State Committee for Work with the Diaspora, Nazim Ibrahimov, told reporters.

Ibrahimov said using the word "Garabagh" on the air would have served Azerbaijan’s propaganda purposes regarding the country’s long-standing conflict with Armenia over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, but the ZDF channel had prevented this. He said relevant German bodies would be approached over the fact.

But Azerbaijanis living in Germany have said the situation was somewhat differrent. They phoned the Baku-based ANS TV channel saying that ZDF had presented both soccer clubs by the towns they represent, i.e. "Dortmund-Aghdam". They suggested that this be taken into account when the state committee appeals to German authorities over the distortion of the "Garabagh" title.

Borussia Dortmund won the UEFA Europe League’s play-off match 4:0. The return match will be held in Baku on August 26.
