Azeri agency demining ancient Turkish city
BAKU - The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) is conducting mine clearance work in the ancient Turkish city of Karkamis located in Gaziantep, on the border with Syria.
According to ANAMA, over 1,000 anti-tank and infantry mines have been rendered harmless since the consortium established by the agency and Turkey’s Nokta Insaat company tackled the operations in February. The consortium had won a tender for mine clearance work in the area, which encompasses 680,000 square meters.
Mine clearance is being carried out on the remains of an ancient city for the first time in world history. Given the historic importance of Karkamis, the operations are being conducted manually for the most part. Under an agreement reached with Turkish officials, antiques, money and other valuable items are transferred to the Turkish government.
Mines were planted in the area in the 1960s, when border delimitation differences emerged between Turkey and Syria.
