Azeri plane crashes in Turkey; no casualties

13 August 2010 09:03 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – A passenger plane flying from Baku crashed while landing at the Istanbul airport on Thursday. No one was hurt.

The Airbus-319 owned by Azerbaijan’s state airline AzAL slid off the runway into the soil after landing at about 11 a.m. local time.

The front of the plane was damaged, but there were no casualties among eight crew members and 119 passengers, including two children. The passengers were evacuated through emergency exits.

Maharram Safarli, the AzAL spokesman, said the accident had been caused by a malfunction in the front side of the airplane.

AzAL said in a statement that the airline and Turkish civil aviation officials have launched a probe to establish causes of the accident.

Preliminary conclusions suggest that upon landing onto the runway the crew captain failed to properly handle the speed of the aircraft. As a result, a part of the front chassis bent and the engine surface was damaged.

But Turkey’s AirportHaber news portal said the accident was caused by a belated opening of the chassis. Moreover, the plane’s tyres were obsolete, it said.
