Peacekeepers to pull out of Kosovo
Azerbaijani peacekeepers will be recalled from the Serbian province
of Kosovo, according to an appeal forwarded to the parliament by
President Ilham Aliyev.
"The head of state took the step due to the change in the political situation in Kosovo," said Zahid Oruj, member of the Milli Majlis commission on security and defense issues.
Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on February 17. The Azerbaijani government criticized the move, saying it did not recognize the province as an independent state.
Under Azerbaijan's laws, the parliament is to pass a decision on the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces. The issue will be put on discussion in the legislature on March 4, Oruj said.
37 Azerbaijani troops have been serving as part of the Turkish peacekeeping contingent in Kosovo since 1999.
The UN has administered Kosovo since a NATO campaign forced out Serbian troops. Armenians hope for the application of the Kosovo model in Upper Garabagh - an Azeri region occupied by Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities. Azerbaijani officials have dismissed the claims.
