NATO PA to discuss Karabakh conflict - lawmaker

9 August 2010 20:08 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU - The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh will be discussed at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s fall session, an Azerbaijani lawmaker represented in the assembly has said.

Siyavush Novruzov, deputy executive secretary of the ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP), told the yap.org.az website that during the NATO PA’s spring session held in Riga, Azerbaijani delegation members pointed out during a meeting with the alliance’s representatives that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is discussed in other influential international organizations. Therefore, holding such discussions would be appropriate during a NATO PA session as well, they said.

"As a result of the meeting the organization’s leadership issued orders to enter the Nagorno Karabakh problem into the agenda of the NATO PA fall session. Rapporteurs on the issue have already been assigned and preparations are underway in a relevant committee," Novruzov said.

According to him, NATO has always supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. A map in the book dedicated to the alliance’s 50th anniversary shows Nagorno Karabakh as Azerbaijani territory and its center is indicated as the town of Khankandi.

Nagorno Karabakh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenia since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Nagorno Karabakh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.
