BAKU - Two helicopters of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan left for Russia Wednesday to help extinguishing forest fires that have hit central Russia.
The MI-17 and Ka-32A helicopters with 19 personnel on board headed toward Voronezh and Lipetsk.
Ashraf Gasimov, director of the emergencies ministry’s aviation group, told reporters that the helicopters are to work in Russia for two weeks, but the ministry is ready to extend the period and to increase the number of equipment and personnel if necessary.
Wildfires in Russia have engulfed 529 locations encompassing an area of over 172,300 hectares. The Russian government on Tuesday accepted Azerbaijan and Ukraine’s offers to assist in putting out the wildfires. Ukraine will grant two aircraft to Russia.
