Forged Armenian cognac removed from sale in Germany

5 August 2010 08:36 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU - Forged cognac produced in Armenia was removed from the shelves in Germany after the Azerbaijani government took action to expose the illegal sales following media reports.

The Azerbaijani embassy in Germany first scrutinized the reports posted on some news websites saying such products were on sale in Heilbronn with labels indicating Nagorno Karabakh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation, as part of Armenia.

According to the Foreign Ministry, a letter expressing protest was sent through Azerbaijan’s honorary consulate in Stuttgart to Aniland GmbH, the company that sells the cognac in Germany. Aniland GmbH replied that it does not want to anyhow meddle in the political developments ongoing in the Caucasus region and therefore demanded that its supplier change the labels of the product from January 2010. Since then, sales of the cognac were halted and the product was returned to Armenia. The seller pledged it would market only cognac with proper labels.
