Opposition alliance rules out holding protest rallies
BAKU – The opposition Union for Democracy alliance refused to hold protest rallies at its Council of Chairmen meeting in Baku Monday.
"There is no need to repeat actions, which would not have any effect," said the chairman of the key opposition Azadlyg Party, Mr. Ahmed Oruj.
Police dispersed an unsanctioned opposition rally downtown Baku on Saturday, reportedly arresting around 100 protesters. The anti-government protest was organized by the opposition Musavat and Popular Front parties. Protesters were calling for free elections and were also attempting to highlight what they claim is the lack of civil liberties in the country.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is holding talks with Baku city authorities in an attempt to lift alleged restrictions on rallies in central locations.
The meeting of the opposition alliance also mulled the opportunities for opposition to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections, as well as the political situation in the country.
The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, scheduled for November 7, are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.
The latest parliamentary elections were held in November of 2005.
