Interior ministry warns against unauthorized opposition protests
BAKU – Baku City Police and Prosecutor's Office warned in a joint statement that protest actions by Azeri opposition, planned for July 31 in the Azeri capital, are considered as illegal, since the Baku Mayoral office did not sanction them.
The statement said that if opposition parties hold unauthorized protests, using illegal means, the organizers of these actions will be kept responsible in accordance with the law.
On July 23, Baku Mayoral office received a joint appeal from the Musavat Party and other members of the Union for Democracy alliance to authorize a mass opposition rally scheduled for July 31 (from 15:00 to 18:00).
The Mayoral office rejected to offer places close to downtown for holding the protest actions, which were requested by opposition. It said the mass protests could disrupt the normal city life and would lead to traffic jams.
